NET-S

The NETS-S (National Educational Technology Standards and Performance Indicators for Students) are basically the same as the NETS-T (same thing, but for teachers) except instead of describing things to be taught, the NETS-S suggests standards that students should strive for. Developing a GAME plan for to accomplish as many of these standards througout the year would work much like the GAME plan I have developed for teaching at least two standards.

Students would start off by choosing one standard they feel is important to master and make that their Goal. They will then use critical thinking skills to develop an Action. Once their actions are in order, it will be time for them to Monitor their progress. As they monitor, they will Evaluate and assess their progress.

In my classroom we conduct ourselves accoding to a CLS (Classroom Learning Systems) model. Each week, students pick a short-term goal and create an action plan for it. As the week goes on, students follow their action plan and monitor their progress. By week's end, students evaluate their success. If they succeeded in their short-term goal, they will choose a new one next week. If their goal is not met, they will reevaluate what they need to do in order to accomplish their goal. I plan on encouraging students to view the NETS-S standards in the beginning of the school year to help them set a GAME plan for all 6 Standards

    Is your whole district using the CLS model or is it just your classroom? This is a great way to help students set goals and reflect on their progress. The GAME plan enables you to customize your approach to learning tasks, to develop relevant skills that are important to you, and prepares you for lifelong learning (Cennamo, Ross, & Ertmer, 2009). The GAME plan is a natural fit for working on student goals.

  2. Carman,

    What kinds of short term goals do your students set? I really think my students need to set goals like bringing a pencil to class every day for a week or completing all the homework for the week. At the same time, I wonder if having a goal each week would get old and students would start to blow it off. You must have to emphasize the importance of this as a part of the learning process.

    The action plans that your students complete in your class and the short term goals that they choose to master go along with exactly what our GAME plan requires us as teachers to do. Due to the fact that your students have previously worked with progressing towards mastering goals, students will not require as much assistance or guidance as those who have not had the experience with setting and mastering goals.

  4. CLS is something my school has adopted, but not the whole county. It was a big push about two years ago for my whole school, but now only those who want to conduct their classrooms in that way do. I really saw a lot of progress from my students by conducting my class in this manner so I stuck with it.

    Goals my students set are often weekly goals like getting a certain percent on a test or learn two more songs on the clarinet this week. Short term goals help them achieve long term dreams.

    I do something similar to what you do in my classroom. At the beginning of last year I was having a problem with behavior from my students. I started the flip card system. Every student started the day on green. Yellow was a warning, blue was loss of recess, and red was a call home. At the end of each month I would tell my kids how many days of the month they were on each color. They would then graph each color. On the back of their graph they would set a goal for themselves for the next month. They would also include strategies that they can use in order to help meet that goal. At the end of the next month I would give them back their graph before they made their next one and they would write either yes they met their goal or no they didn't. If they didn't meet their goal they would either come up with a new goal or change their strategies so hopefully they will be successful.
